Gege Akutami, the notoriously reclusive creator of Jujutsu Kaisen, has confirmed that the series is nearing its climax during a new Q&A session at his currently running Shibuya exhibit in Japan.

Gege Akutami has revealed that the current “Shibuya Showdown Arc” represents Jujutsu Kaisen’s endgame. The “Gege Akutami Jujutsu Kaisen Exhibition” in Japan includes a new Q&A session in which Akutami was asked about the concept for the Culling Games before writing it.

Akutami responded in a translation on X (formerly Twitter), “I thought of it as a crutch for taking us towards the Shibuya Showdown arc (final section/saga).” I had already decided on what needed to happen (characters and Colony stuff), but I kept each Colony segment contained to be its own individual volume, and thought about how to make them as exciting as possible as I went.”

This revelation is unsurprising but stark, as Akutami has long hinted that the series would end sooner rather than later. The series continues the gripping battle between Gojo and his fellow sorcerers against Sukuna, who returns on July 7. Akutami had taken a two-week break, which had been extended for another week due to health reasons. Along with the Q&A questions, Akutami’s exhibition includes a timeline of Jujutsu Kaisen, as well as one-shots and series prototypes. Anime! Anime! describes the exhibition in detail, revealing that the hall contains over 4,400 pages of manuscripts and over 3,000 pages of drafts.

While Jujutsu Kaisen is ending this year, the anime is likely to return next year. It is still unclear whether Jujutsu Kaisen’s third installment will be a television series or a film. However, during his visit to the Anime Expo in July, Season 2’s Shota Goshozono provided insight into the series’ production, with the director returning in some capacity for the next installment. This will adapt the “Culling Game” arc, which premiered its first trailer last year.

Jujutsu Kaisen’s conclusion will be similar to that of My Hero Academia, which will conclude in August following the conclusion of the “Final War Arc.” VIZ licenses the Jujutsu Kaisen manga in North America and describes the series: “Yuji Itadori appears to be your average teenager, but his incredible physical strength is something to behold! Every sports club wants him to join, but Itadori prefers to hang out with the school’s outcasts at the Occult Research Club. One day, the club acquires a sealed cursed object. They are unaware of the terror that awaits them once the seal is broken.
