Hisoka Morow, one of the most contentious characters in the Hunter x Hunter franchise, is brought to life in this impressive anime cosplay. The timing couldn’t be more perfect, as the long-delayed series approaches its official return.

Hunter x Hunter

A Reddit user known as “bushideezy” posted photos of their wife cosplaying as Hisoka on the popular cosplay forum. The photos showcase the character’s playful yet deadly attitude. Each photograph features Hisoka posing casually in a dramatic lighting. However, as Hunter x Hunter fans know, Hisoka is far from innocent. When the opportunity arises, Hisoka strikes like a viper without hesitation.

The cosplayer portraying Hisoka does an excellent job of recreating the character’s appearance and personality. Hisoka is dressed in his usual attire, resembling a jester and a magician. Hisoka’s costume is inspired by the version seen in the manga and the 2011 anime series, which features light blue clothing decorated with playing card symbols. It’s also no secret that Hisoka draws visual inspiration from the Joker from Batman, as both are clown-based villains. Hisoka, on the other hand, can align himself with the good guys when it is advantageous to do so.

What makes Hisoka such a divisive character in the Hunter x Hunter series is his unsettling bloodlust and who it is directed at. Hisoka has the most interaction with Gon Freecss and Killua Zoldyck because the Hunter x Hunter story revolves around them. Because of the vast age difference between the characters, Hisoka expressing his desire for carnage with two children comes across as creepy, especially since his desire for them to become stronger and more deserving of killing has been interpreted as sexual by some. Nonetheless, it should be noted that Hisoka’s attraction to others is solely based on their strength, not their age, gender, or appearance.

While activity in the Hunter x Hunter fandom has been low due to years of hiatuses caused by creator Yoshihiro Togashi’s poor health, the series has recently received a boost from Togashi’s positive updates. Togashi has been sharing drafts of new chapters for the Hunter x Hunter manga on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, as well as new artwork based on his previous work with Yu Yu Hakusho and current interests with Resident Evil. In addition to confirming the completion of Chapters 402 and 403, Togashi recently announced the release date of a new Hunter x Hunter volume.

Hunter x Hunter: Volume 38 will be released on September 4, 2024. Previous chapters are available for reading on Viz Media and the Manga Plus app. Several streaming services, including Netflix, Crunchyroll, and Hulu, offer the anime series from 1999 and 2011.
