CloverWorks (known for Spy x Family and Fate/Grand Order) teased its upcoming fantasy-drama anime, Fureru, last year with a brief trailer. The acclaimed animation studio has released an official debut full trailer, revealing new plot details about the film.
CloverWorks’ initial teaser, released in December 2023, introduced the film’s titular character, a cute hedgehog-like animal who has a mysterious connection to the protagonists. Aniplex, which is producing the film alongside Story Inc. (Weathering With You), recently released a new trailer for Fureru on its official YouTube channel, featuring the three main stars together for the first time. According to Fureru’s official website, the story follows “childhood friends who grew up on the same island [in] Takadanobata Tokyo.” Over 20 years later, the trio runs into the mysterious Fureru again, a creature they first met as children. Fureru’s telepathy allows them to hear each other’s “inner voices,” which strengthens their lifelong friendship.
Fureru, unlike many of CloverWorks’ previous productions, is not based on existing properties. The film’s concept was created by the “Super Peace Busters,” the team behind A-1 Pictures’ popular supernatural romance anime Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day. Tatsuyuki Nagai, who directed Anohana and A Certain Scientific Railgun, will also direct Fureru. The script is written by Anohana writer Mari Okada, and Anohana artist Masayoshi Tanaka serves as chief animation director and character designer. YOASOBI, a well-known J-pop artist who has written themes for Oshi no Ko and Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, will perform Fureru’s main theme song, “Monotone.”
According to the content of Fureru’s trailer, Nagai and Okada’s story appears to be a heartfelt one of love, loyalty, and friendship, making it a fitting creative successor to Spy x Family. Spy x Family, based on Tatsuya Endo’s comedy manga, delves into the special bond between a work-obsessed spy, a deadly assassin, and a telepathic young girl. While the series is primarily comedic, it does contain dramatic elements, such as the popular “Cruise Adventure” arc.
CloverWorks, which co-produced the hit anime adaptation with Wit Studio (Attack on Titan), will end Spy x Family’s second season in December 2023. The animation team recently confirmed the release date of Season 3 with a special teaser video featuring Anya and her dog, Bond.
Fureru is set to premiere in theaters across Japan on October 4, 2025. International release dates are yet to be announced. In the meantime, anime fans can watch the Spy x Family series on Hulu or Crunchyroll. Spy x Family: Code White, which opened in North American theaters earlier this year, is not yet available for streaming.
