Transformers would not be robots in disguise without their iconic alternate modes. One of these real-life vehicles now proudly bears the Autobot insignia, representing one of the brand’s most iconic characters: Bumblebee.
In honor of the Transformers’ 40th anniversary, a new diecast Volkswagen Beetle model depicts its alternate mode from the original Generation 1 series. This nostalgic homage is meant to resemble its classic appearance from the G1 Transformers anime. This licensed vehicle has been featured in a number of models released or revealed in the last year.
Jada Toys produces the Bumblebee Volkswagen Beetle diecast car as part of their “Hollywood Rides” series. Unlike the actual G1 toy, which has a more super-deformed appearance, this model looks like a fully proportioned Volkswagen Beetle. Despite not transforming, the collectible is unmistakably a Transformer. It bears the Autobot insignia on its hood and license plate, capturing the spirit of Bumblebee even when not in robot mode. Interestingly, despite being based on the cartoon version, the Jada Toys Bumblebee car features artwork depicting the G1 Bumblebee toy in robot mode.
This diecast model has two doors that open, a detailed interior, and rubber tires. At 1:32 scale, the car is about five inches long, providing a compact yet substantial size. This Bumblebee model, priced around $9.99 and available for pre-order, is a must-have for both die-hard Transformers fans and model car enthusiasts. Shipping is expected to begin in July, so fans who want to expand their collection should order now.
The Jada Toys Bumblebee Volkswagen Beetle is one of several new toys commemorating the iconic Autobot’s 40th anniversary. Other new releases include the “Missing Link” Bumblebee figure, which accurately updates his classic toy, and a repaint/retool of the similar Autobot Cliffjumper. The movie-based Transformers Studio Series will include a figure inspired by its appearance in the 1986 film “The Transformers: The Movie,” and a new Lego set will depict G1 Bumblebee in both robot and vehicle mode. However, the vehicle modes used in these figures are generic compact cars rather than officially licensed Volkswagen Beetles.
Recently, Kodansha’s Japanese magazine revealed a “shining” version of the Transformers: Buzzworthy Bumblebee toy, which features a translucent gold color scheme. Other licensed non-transforming figures for the franchise include Hot Wheels collaborations with Generation 1 Bumblebee and Optimus Prime, as well as Mattel’s diecast transforming Optimus Prime. While its association with the Chevrolet Camaro in Michael Bay’s live-action Transformers films is well known, many fans will always remember him as a Volkswagen Beetle.
Its enduring legacy continues to captivate the hearts of both old and new fans, and these latest collectibles cement his place in Transformers history.
