Akase Akari, whose ending song for My Dress-Up Darling has received over 14.9 million views, wowed fans with her recent Marin cosplay during a trip to the United Kingdom this month.
Akari attended the Hyper Japan Festival 2024 in London, England, and wowed fans, according to PR Times and X (formerly Twitter). The Hyper Japan Festival celebrates manga, anime, music, fashion, food, gaming, and technology, and this year’s event will take place from July 19 to 21, 2024. Akari cosplayed Marin Kitagawa, the anime’s main character, and performed eight songs to reportedly huge cheers. Unsurprisingly, this included the My Dress-Up Darling ending theme, “Koi no Yukue.”
In addition to “Koi no Yukue,” Akari performed “Idol,” the opening of Oshi no Ko by YOASOBI, “Connect,” the opening of Puella Magi Madoka Magica by ClariS, “Seishun Complex,” the opening of Bocchi the Rock! by Kessoku Band, and “Blue Bird,” the opening of Naruto Shippuden by Ikimonogakari. Her performance included English segments as she emceed, and it ended with a huge round of applause. When asked about the show, Akari responded, “I think there were some people who saw me perform live for the first time, but I hope that this will be a wonderful memory for those who watched the concert and that it will make them love Japan, anime, and anime songs even more.”
Fans are still waiting for updates on My Dress-Up Darling Season 2, which was officially announced in 2022 but has yet to receive a release date. Nonetheless, the franchise’s popularity continues to grow; the manga sold over 10 million copies last year, and the anime recently announced a new maid pop-up store collaboration, complete with Marin cosplay artwork in a Chinese dress. The series will also include autographed cards of various Marin cosplays created by Build Divide. Cosplay tributes to the series continue to be popular, with recent images including Marin at the beach by Yua Takanashi and Araki’s Shizuku-tan cosplay.
Fans can watch My Dress-Up Darling on Crunchyroll, which describes the series as follows: “Wakana Gojo is a high school boy who wishes to become a kashirashi–a master craftsman who creates traditional Japanese Hina dolls. Despite his enthusiasm for the craft, he is unaware of current trends and struggles to fit in with his classmates. The popular kids, particularly one girl named Marin Kitagawa, appear to live in a different world. That all changes one day, when she reveals an unexpected secret to him, and their worlds collide.
