The FBI swiftly goes to work, having initiated its investigation with agents arriving in Japan four days ago. Upon assessment, they identify 141 individuals who have access to the task force’s information.

Light consistently reminds Ryuk to avoid public conversations, as even though Ryuk is invisible, people can observe Light seemingly talking to thin air, potentially arousing suspicion. Ryuk clarifies that he stands neither on Light’s nor L’s side. However, lately, something has been troubling Ryuk. He points out a person who has been tailing Light’s every move. Perplexed, Light assures Ryuk that he will handle this individual within a few days. Once in his room, Light breathes a sigh of relief upon confirming that no one has entered. He realizes that Kira’s possession of task force information has led L to suspect those associated with the National Police Agency (NPA). Determined to preempt surveillance, Light resolves to uncover the identity of the person trailing him and regain control.

While contemplating how to learn the person’s name discreetly, Ryuk initiates a conversation highlighting two significant disparities between Shinigami and humans who possess the Death Note. He elaborates that Shinigami inscribe human names into the Death Note to extend their own lifespans. For instance, if a human’s natural lifespan is 60 years and a Shinigami records them to die at 40, the Shinigami gains an additional 20 years. Consequently, harming a Shinigami won’t result in their death. However, Ryuk reveals that a method to kill a Shinigami does exist. Conversely, if a human uses the Death Note to record other humans’ names, their own lifespan remains unaffected. This is the primary difference between a Shinigami and a human possessing the Death Note.

The second difference is more intriguing. Shinigami observe the human realm from their own dimension and select individuals to write in the Death Note. Shinigami possess unique eyes that enable them to see humans’ names and lifespans hovering above their heads. These distinct eyes are a significant distinction between humans and Shinigami. Additionally, there exists a traditional pact: a Shinigami who drops their Death Note can strike a deal with the human who picks it up, granting that human Shinigami eyes. However, this agreement comes at a price—the human must sacrifice half of their remaining lifespan.
