The problem Light was concerned about is that touching the Death Note would make Ryuk visible to the person. Meanwhile, L is analyzing Kira’s actions, particularly his demonstration of being able to control the timing of deaths. A few days earlier, Kira manipulated events to make L believe he was a student. However, Kira’s sudden shift in targeting leaves L perplexed. The aspect bothering L the most is how Kira is accessing information known only to the task force. L suspects there’s a leak within the police force. He covertly contacts Watari, who is at the special task force office, instructing him to leave the office and find a private place to communicate with the FBI director.
To solve the problem of concealing the Death Note, Light goes shopping for specific items he needs to hide the notebook effectively. He devises a plan to keep the Death Note hidden in his room, making it easily accessible while ensuring the police couldn’t find it even with a search warrant. Light shares with Ryuk his advantage of having a father in the National Police Agency (NPA) and Light can easily hack into the police database without leaving a trace, thus allowing Light to stay ahead in the investigation.
Ryuk is puzzled by Light’s actions that raised L’s suspicions about a potential link between Kira and the police. Light clarifies his determination to find and eliminate L, and emphasizes that if Kira choose to hide, he will never discover L. Moreover, Light predicts that L will spy on the task force due to Kira’s access to their information, causing strained relations between L and the police. While initially working together, the police and L will eventually turn against each other. Kira concludes that L won’t be found by him, but by the police, after which he plans to eliminate L.
Back at the task force headquarters, some police officers resign due to their fear of Kira’s retribution. Believing Kira will eventually target those who are trying to catch him, they leave the case and their jobs to protect themselves. While L hasn’t revealed his name or face, police officers carry identification cards that make them easy targets and therefore they resigns, fearing Kira’s wrath. The fear of Kira’s actions fosters a sense of division within the task force.
Light in his room successfully hides the Death note. Light hides it inside drawer of his study table. The drawer has a hidden compartment which is used for hiding the Death Note and can only be safely accessed using a particular method. To unlock this compartment, Light unscrews an ink reservoir from regular ballpoint pen on his desk and pushes it up into a small hole underneath the drawer, lifting up the fake bottom to reveal the Death Note. Even if someone figures out that there is a fake base, the drawer was designed to prevent anyone from ever discovering the Death Note. Once the ink reservoir is inserted, it acts as an insulator, preventing the flow of electricity around the circuit. When the fake base of the drawer is put back, a piece of rubber fills the same role. If someone were to try and force the bottom of the drawer open, however, the circuit would connect, igniting the gasoline contained in the thin plastic casing and instantly setting the Death Note on fire. This would destroy all the evidence that Light ever possessed a killer notebook.
The FBI director is surprised when L requests a top-secret investigation of all NPA personnel involved in the Kira case, including their close friends and families, suspecting that Kira might be among them. The FBI director agrees, given the large number of American criminals believed to be Kira’s victims. This initiative is the most extensive worldwide.
