Chapter 3: Family

Ryuk’s unwavering interest in apples and his consistent consumption of them, often while perched in the shadows, intently observing the events of the human world. Meanwhile, Light seizes a brief respite, patiently awaiting the next strategic moves of the police investigation. He astutely notes the pervasive discussions surrounding the figures of “Kira” and “L” across various media channels, from television and radio to social media platform. Light raises the point that Kira’s excessive attention to these discussions could lead to undue stress, postulating that Kira is affording himself a mental break.

With a sense of pride, Light holds the Death Note in his hands, only to be abruptly interrupted by a knock on his door. It is his sister, Sayu. Hastily, he conceals the ominous book within a drawer before greeting her. Sayu takes her seat at the desk, unaware of the presence of the Shinigami Ryuk, who informs Light of the potential visibility of the Death Note to those who touch it. Light expresses his exasperation at Ryuk’s timing and then engages in a conversation with Sayu, who discusses Light’s aspirations to become a detective and join the national police agency.

Meanwhile, L delves into contemplation, pondering why Kira could not carry out his lethal intentions against him. Watari, stationed at the Special Search Headquarters in Japan, facilitates L’s connection to an ongoing meeting. Within the Special Search Headquarters, under the leadership of Chief Soichiro Yagami, meticulous analysis of the heart attack victims’ deaths is conducted. An officer determines that 68% of the victims passed away on weekdays between 4 PM and 2 AM, with the majority succumbing between 8 PM and midnight. Intriguingly, the police have received 14 calls from individuals claiming knowledge of Kira or having seen him, along with 21 callers purporting to be Kira. However, the police remain cautious about the credibility of these callers. L acknowledges the team’s efforts and deliberations, noting the reduction in global crime rates, particularly in Japan. Despite general agreement, a consensus emerges that Kira’s methods are inhumane. L’s final request is an investigation into whether the media ever featured images or likenesses of the criminals who later suffered fatal heart attacks.

Back at home, Light takes on the role of an educator, imparting knowledge of quadratic equations to his younger sister, Sayu. The family gathers for dinner, joined by Light’s father, Chief Soichiro Yagami. Observing his father’s fatigue, Light inquires about his ongoing investigation, while unbeknownst to everyone else, Ryuk stands behind Light, amused by his advantage of having the chief of the Special Search Headquarters as his own father.

As dinner concludes, Light retreats to his room, strategizing and refining his understanding of the Death Note’s mechanics. Ryuk informs Light that the police have narrowed their focus to a student within the Kanto Region. Light chuckles enigmatically, revealing that he himself guided them to this conclusion. He revisits the rules of the Death Note, particularly the 40-second window for the specified cause of death and the subsequent 6 minutes and 40 seconds for writing the details. Light plans to utilize these rules to orchestrate specific heart attack scenarios.

In the ensuing days, the police are rattled by a series of heart attack victims, each passing away an hour apart, over the course of two consecutive week days. The deliberations lead the police to question whether Kira could be a school student. L intervenes, suggesting that Kira’s intent is not to convey his student status, but rather to communicate his ability to control the timing of deaths and access classified information known only to the police. This is unmistakably a challenge aimed at L.

Meanwhile Light seeking solace in an abandoned house, he reveals in Ryuk about the dilemma posed by the Death Note. The very presence of the Death Note in his possession constitutes a danger, as any physical contact with it would require him to kill the person to protect the secret. This predicament extends to his family, raising the grim possibility that Kira might have to eliminate them to safeguard his secret identity.
